The course will focus on antimicrobial resistance and cover basic definitions, an overview of antimicrobials, their use, and the emergence and spread of resistance. This course aims to guide clinicians and those in the medical field who frequently prescribe antimicrobials through the concepts, the importance of the spread and dissemination, and how that happens. It will explain how bacteria become resistant and the mechanisms they might use. This course aims to equip practitioners with knowledge and tools to improve their use of essential medications in daily clinical practice. It will first review the foundational clinical knowledge necessary to use antimicrobials wisely. Then, it will illustrate how to incorporate this knowledge into managing patients with common infections through adherence to the core competencies of appropriate antimicrobial prescribing. This course will provide a framework for approaching each clinical encounter from the perspective of combating antimicrobial resistance.
