Description
This online course was developed to help speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists enhance their abilities to provide positive, solution-focused care to patients with dementia. The course covers a wide range of topics, including the most common types of dementia, how they impact daily living, and the role of SLPs and audiologists in screening, assessing, diagnosing, intervening, and treating patients with dementia. The course also includes information on working collaboratively with nursing staff, home health aides, and care partners to ensure the best possible patient outcomes.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define dementia and common neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia.
- Discuss mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia.
- Discuss the types of dementia and symptoms associated with it.
- Review the most common cause and risk factors (modifiable and non-modifiable) associated with dementia.
- Review the signs and symptoms of dementia.
- Review the role and responsibilities of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists in screening, assessing, diagnosing, and treating persons with dementia.
- Discuss assessment (screening, hearing loss, visual impairment, depression, medications) tools to assess cognitive impairment related to dementia.
- Discuss the components of the comprehensive assessment (SLP assessment, audiology assessment, case history, interview with individual, interview with family/caregivers, communication, clinical assessment, and instrumental assessment)
- Discuss person-centered intervention focuses on maximizing the individual’s ability to participate in meaningful activities.
- Discuss cultural and linguistic considerations while providing intervention services.
- Discuss general and specific treatment options for persons with dementia.
