Los Angeles & Sacramento County – Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training



Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training offers industry-specific training for body artists to comply with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030, CalOSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard Section 5193 of Title 8 CCR, and California’s Safe Body Art Act AB 300, H & S Section 119307. The course is designed by an experienced infectious disease professional with 22 years of experience in the body art industry and public health. This comprehensive 3-hour course (minimum 2 hours required by law) covers body art industry-specific information on bloodborne pathogens and other highly contagious skin infections and infectious diseases.

Upon completion of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training course, you will be able to:

  • Review the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, which is contained in Section 5193 of Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations or its successor.
  • Review the state, city, county, or local body art act.
  • Discuss the transmission, control, and symptoms of the diseases caused by bloodborne pathogens.
  • Discuss the tasks involved in performing body art and how those tasks may expose the client or practitioner to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Discuss the types and uses of Personal Protective Equipment (i.e., gloves, aprons, bibs, masks, and eye protection), their limitations, proper task technique, and the order of tasks before and after putting on and removing Personal Protective Equipment to avoid contamination.
  • Discuss the importance of hand hygiene and demonstrate proper hand hygiene techniques.
  • Discuss the choice, use, and storage of disinfectants and antiseptics specific to Bloodborne Pathogen diseases.
  • Discuss the signage required for biohazard materials and the importance of properly labeling chemicals and supplies.
  • Review information on the hepatitis B vaccine, including safety and accessibility.
  • Discuss what constitutes a bloodborne pathogen exposure incident and the procedure to follow after an exposure incident, including medical follow-up. Also, discuss what actions to take to prevent or minimize future exposures.
