Description
The carpometacarpal joint (CMC) is a type of saddle-shaped joint that connects the trapezium, a carpal bone, to the first metacarpal bone of the thumb. This joint is highly mobile, but less stable than other joints in the hand. Often, other joints, in addition to the trapezium, such as the scaphoid, trapezoid, and second metacarpal bones, can be affected by osteoarthritis (OA) of the CMC joint. This course is designed to provide occupational and physical therapy professionals with an evidence-based approach to the conservative management of Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to :
- Identify the anatomy involved in CMC OA.
- Understand the etiology of CMC OA.
- Identify and understand 3-5 appropriate outcome measures discussed in the literature to evaluate CMC OA.
- Identify 3-5 appropriate evidence-based treatment interventions or combinations of treatment interventions supported by the literature on the treatment of CMC OA.
- Understand the use of a CMC orthosis in treating CMC OA.
