Obesity is occurring at an epidemic rate in the United States. Multiple factors contribute to the increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity, including, but not limited to, a sedentary lifestyle, sugared drinks, and soda, and the rise in convenience (“fast”) foods. Children burdened with obesity are at an increased risk for early onset of cardiovascular disease, bone and joint complications, depression, other mental illnesses, and diabetes. Intervention methods and educational points are emphasized.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: 

• Describe the prevalence, trends, and consequences of childhood obesity.
• Discuss the interventions to promote healthy eating and active living.
• Child and adult behaviors contribute to excessive weight gain in children.
• Environmental factors contribute to excessive weight gain in children.
• Assess factors related to excessive weight gain in children.
• Identify appropriate intervention methods and strategies for addressing excessive weight gain in children.
• Develop an action plan for addressing childhood obesity in your community.
