Upon completion of this course (Controlled Substances: Safe and Effective Prescribing), you will be able to: 

• Understand the different controlled substances and their schedules, purposes, risks for substance use, and addiction disorders.
• Have knowledge about the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act, which covers the laws associated with prescribing controlled substances, including medication schedules, prescription filling rules, and registration requirements.
• Recognize substance use and addiction disorders, including prescription drug abuse, misuse, addiction, and diversion, and learn about their prevention and risk factors.
• Understand the prevalence of controlled substances and prescription substance use and addiction.
• Know the steps involved in evaluating patients with chronic pain which require the use of controlled substances.
• Learn the steps required to ensure safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances, including professional documentation, patient-provider agreements, and informed consent.
