This continuing education course aims to help healthcare professionals understand the appropriate use of controlled substances, the associated risks, and how to prescribe these medications safely and effectively.
Upon completion of this course (Controlled Substances: Safe and Effective Prescribing), you will be able to:
- Understand the different controlled substances and their schedules, purposes, risks for substance use, and addiction disorders.
- Have knowledge about the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act, which covers the laws associated with prescribing controlled substances, including medication schedules, prescription filling rules, and registration requirements.
- Recognize substance use and addiction disorders, including prescription drug abuse, misuse, addiction, and diversion, and learn about their prevention and risk factors.
- Understand the prevalence of controlled substances and prescription substance use and addiction.
- Know the steps involved in evaluating patients with chronic pain which require the use of controlled substances.
- Learn the steps required to ensure safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances, including professional documentation, patient-provider agreements, and informed consent.
