Dental Management of Geriatric Patients – 4 Hours (Video 🎥)

We need to acknowledge the aging of the American population. By 2035, the number of adults over 65 will exceed the number of children under 18. This older adult population is also growing faster than any other age group. As this population continues to grow, healthcare and dental care for older patients become more important.

Geriatric patients aged 65 or older have unique health and dental challenges that are related to aging and chronic illnesses. Some of these illnesses affect the teeth, while others impact the provision of dental care. It’s important to consider the patient’s medical status before providing dental treatment. The range of health, functional, and mental status of the older population means that geriatric dentistry is a dynamic and diverse field that requires a patient-specific approach.

The Dental Management of Geriatric Patients course will delve into the concepts and perspectives of geriatric dentistry. Topics covered will include common medical diagnoses and considerations for older adults, treatment planning, specific preventative and restorative dental treatment methods, and patient care considerations. We will focus on aspects unique to older populations and review concepts that apply to all patient populations.

Upon completion of this course (Dental Management of Geriatric Patients), you will be able to:

  • Analyze the unique elements of geriatric dentistry that distinguish it from general dentistry and discuss the aspects of geriatric dentistry that are the same as care for all other patients.
  • Assess the specific medical and dental diagnoses that tend to be common among older adults that impact treatment planning and the provision of dental care to this population.
  • Compare different paradigms for treatment planning for geriatric patients compared to the general population.
  • Learn about treatment modalities that can be utilized broadly among geriatric patients.
  • Discuss implementation practices for the provision of care for geriatric patients
