Description
The field of diabetes care is rapidly changing, and the quality of diabetes care across providers and practice settings is variable. Ongoing diabetes education is critical for preventing acute and long-term complications. The Diabetes Management Essentials for Nursing course (Comprehensive Diabetes Care) was developed to help pharmacists and technicians stay current on the essentials of diabetes management.
Upon completion of the Diabetes Management Essentials for Nursing Professionals course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss strategies for optimizing the quality of diabetes care.
- Describe the implications of social determinants of health in diabetes.
- List different types of diabetes.
- Recognize various diabetes screening recommendations.
- Discuss diabetes prevention strategies.
- Describe different methods for monitoring glycemic control.
- Recognize diabetes pharmacotherapy and its potential side effects.
- Describe the comorbidity benefits of glucose-lowering medications.
- Discuss diabetes treatment options recommended by the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes 2022.
- Distinguish among recommendations for different types of diabetes (type 1 vs type 2, etc.) and populations (pregnancy, youth, adults, older adults, etc.).
- Discuss the roles of individuals involved in diabetes management (parents, caregivers, school personnel, specialists, etc.)
- Identify interprofessional services that contribute to optimal diabetes care.
- List medication safety techniques such as adverse effect monitoring, hypoglycemia prevention and management, regimen reconciliation/ management/simplification, carbohydrate counting/meal planning, risk assessments, protocols, order sets, use of technology, and decision support.
- Recognize comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction strategies (diet/exercise, obesity/hypertension/dyslipidemia management, smoking cessation, antiplatelet)
- Identify strategies to reduce the risk of microvascular complications (nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy).
- Discuss how diabetes care may change depending on the setting (inpatient, outpatient, long-term care facility, perioperative, etc.) and acuity (emergency department, stable inpatient, critically ill, transitions of care, etc.).
