Description
This course aims to serve as a useful reference for learning and reviewing the anatomy of the diaphragm. Additionally, it will emphasize the significance of the diaphragm’s strength and function as a core stabilizer and thoracoabdominal pump in clinical settings. We will also discuss the positive impact of diaphragmatic breathing on a patient’s mental and physical recovery after mechanical ventilation. Mechanical ventilation can cause VIDD (ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction), which we will examine in detail. As healthcare professionals, such as PTs, OTs, and nurses, we will learn how to mitigate the negative physical and physiological effects of mechanical ventilation, thereby speeding up the patient’s recovery process. We will briefly touch upon the systemic causes of diaphragm weakness, supported by case studies for better comprehension.
Additionally, PTs and OTs will gain a better understanding of posture, the diaphragm’s role in gait and balance, and its role as a core stabilizer. Finally, the course will conclude by demonstrating various exercises for strengthening and stretching the diaphragm throughout the many stages of rehabilitation post-mechanical ventilation, including lying, sitting, standing, and walking.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:Â
- Identify the structures related to the anatomy and physiology of the diaphragm.
- Understand and identify the physical and physiological effects of mechanical ventilation.
- Perform and identify differential diagnoses of diaphragm disorders through case studies and examples.
- Perform strengthening and stretching exercises for the diaphragm in various positions of supine, sitting, standing, and ambulation through different stages of rehabilitation.
