In the HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) certification course, we will dive into the science of HIV transmission, explore the step-by-step process of evaluating exposure, and master the administration of PEP, all while learning how to support individuals in moments of uncertainty and fear. This course emphasizes the critical role of pharmacists in promoting sexual health. Pharmacists have a meaningful impact by providing patients with access to contraceptives, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatments, and preventive medications like PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-exposure Prophylaxis).
Upon completion of the HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) course, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will be able to:
- Understand HIV transmission, types of exposures, and risk assessment.
- Describe the role of the pharmacist in sexual health and STI management.
- Describe effective strategies to build trust with patients when taking a sexual history
- Explain the “5Ps + 3” approach and its importance in the sexual history
- Explain the concept of gender diversity and the needs of LGBTQ+ patients
- Discuss issues surrounding medical mistrust and equity gaps and how they impact patient care
- Explain the roles of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and HIV treatment in STI/HIV prevention.
- Identify key STI/HIV counseling tips in the pharmacy setting.
- Implement PEP protocols, including point-of-care testing, patient assessment, and counseling.
- Identify special circumstances surrounding STI testing and treatment of minors.
- Discuss STI reporting and how to work with public health in the comprehensive care of patients.
- Describe the strategy of sexual health goal-setting.
- Identify the various PrEP assistance programs available to patients.
- Explain the importance of a trauma-informed approach in patient care.
- Develop strategies to reduce stigma and discrimination within your practice and workplace.
