Description
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a common and distressing side effect of chemotherapy that affects a significant number of patients, ranging from 60% to 80%. Although effective treatment options are available, many clinicians overestimate the effectiveness of antiemetic prophylaxis. This results in patients not getting adequate protection against CINV. Managed care professionals should receive proper training and foundational knowledge of CINV to provide patients with affordable and productive options to improve their quality of life.
Upon completion of this course, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will be able to:
- Describe the different chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (acute, delayed, breakthrough, refractory).
- List the risk factors for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).
- Design antiemetic regimens based on the emetic risk of chemotherapy.
- List the pharmacologic agents used for the prevention of CINV.
- Describe the management of breakthrough CINV.
- Discuss non-pharmacologic management of CINV.
- Discuss the future of immunotherapy.
