Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects many patients living in the United States and worldwide. Thus, healthcare professionals should understand patient care related to irritable bowel syndrome to improve patient outcomes and treatment adherence. Important components include IBS subtypes, signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests, and treatment. There are many different treatment options, which depend on the patient’s predominant IBS subtype.   • Discuss the clinician’s role in the care of patients with IBS.
