The increased use of opioid medications has resulted in a widespread problem of both prescription and non-prescription opioid misuse. It has now become clear that these medications can be highly addictive. Pharmacists can play a crucial role in dealing with opioid abuse by educating both patients and providers, being an integral part of interdisciplinary teams that treat people with pain and/or dependence, helping with prescription drug monitoring and urine drug screening, and advocating for their patients.

  • Describe the risks of abuse and addiction associated with opioid medication.
  • List the sources of misused prescription opioids.
  • Discuss risk assessment tools for substance abuse.
  • Review Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) and the impact of a mandatory PDMP on prescription opioid analgesics.
  • Discuss the pharmacist’s role in preventing opioid abuse through a systematic approach to recognizing and resolving red flags.
