Description
As therapists, we often provide care for diabetes-related complications when a patient has been diagnosed with diabetes for several years. However, we should also play a role in preventing diabetes and be involved in the curative phase. This course is designed to help PTs and OTs identify diabetes in an individual before they are formally diagnosed. As allied health professionals, we should be involved in the patient’s complete care, from lifestyle modifications to their long-term physical and mental well-being. This course will highlight the role of OTs in cognitive aspects and the role of PTs in creating customized exercise prescriptions for individual patient needs. Diabetes management is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and it takes a village to manage a patient with diabetes. We should aim to raise awareness of the importance of involving therapists in the prevention of disease processes and seek involvement not just in symptomatic therapy but also in preventing the disease.
The candidate will learn the latest evidence-based research, including a special section on COVID-19’s effect on diabetes, how to work together as a PT/OT team, and individual roles that can be life-changing for the patient.
