Florida Dental Licensees of the Florida Board of Dentistry are required to renew their licenses biennially in order to maintain the right to practice. Licensed Dentists & Dental Hygienists are required to renew their license no later than midnight, Eastern Time, on February 28, 2018.

First Biennium Renewal: If you are newly licensed and renewing your license for the first time you are only required to complete 2 hours of HIV/AIDS.

All dentists who hold an active sedation permit of any level must complete four (4) hours of continuing education in airway management and four (4) hours of continuing education in medical emergencies, every four (4) years from the last date the dentist took the continuing education course. The four (4) hours in airway management must include two hours didactic training in providing dentistry on sedated patients with compromised airways and two hours must include hands-on training in airway management of sedated patients. The continuing education must be taken through a Florida Board of Dentistry approved continuing education provider. The continuing education required by this subsection will take effect on March 1, 2014. The continuing education required by this subsection may be included in the thirty (30) hours required by Section 466.0135, F.S.

A New Approach to Florida Dental License Renewal. The Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance, will now review your continuing education records in the electronic tracking system at the time of renewal. It will happen automatically when you renew your license, but it is important that you understand how this simple change will affect the way you renew your license in the future.

House Bill 21 – New Opioid Continuing Education Requirements (Click Here) for Florida Dental Professionals: All prescribing practitioners registered with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency and authorized to prescribe controlled substances must complete the continuing education course. The course must be offered by a statewide professional association of physicians in this state that is accredited to provide educational activities designated for the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award Category I Credit or the American Osteopathic Category 1-A continuing medical education requirement AND approved by their respective board.. At this time only following providers meet the criteria to provide continuing education course (The Florida Medical Association, Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, Florida Academy of Family Physicians, and Florida College of Emergency Physicians.)
