- Access a copy of the regulatory standard and explain its contents.
- Have a general understanding of the epidemiology and symptoms of bloodborne diseases.
- Relate the modes of transmission of bloodborne pathogens.
- Be familiar with the company’s Exposure Control Plan (ECP) and request a copy of the written plan.
- Identify tasks and activities that involve exposure to blood and Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIMs).
- Understand the use and limitations of methods that prevent or reduce exposure, including engineering controls, work practices, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify the types, proper use, locations, removal, handling, decontamination, and disposal of PPE.
- Select the appropriate PPE for assigned activities.
- Understand the efficacy, safety, method of administration, and benefits of the Hepatitis B vaccine, which is offered free of charge.
- Recognize the steps to take and persons to contact in an emergency involving human blood or OPIMs.
- Follow the procedure for reporting exposure incidents and understand the available medical follow-up.
- Be aware that post-exposure evaluation and follow-up are required by the employer following an exposure incident.
- Identify the required signs, labels, and color coding as mandated by this rule.
