  • All continuing education must be relevant to occupational therapy or coursework approved by another health profession board or organization. For courses approved by other boards, Alabama Occupational Therapy Board will honor the approved hours for the other professionals.
  • All coursework and in-services required by your employer are acceptable except corporate compliance or any in-service or course specific to your employment i.e.: employee handbook, leave, etc.
  • Proof of attendance (certificates, letters or transcripts) with course title, date(s) and contact hours/CEUs/PDUs must be submitted. Proof of attendance without noted hours will only be allowed .5 contact hour (1/2 hour) of credit.
  • One CPR course is acceptable each renewal period. A copy of your card is proof for one contact hour.
  • Student fieldwork supervision is not acceptable to meet continuing education requirements.
  • There is no limit to the amount of hours you may obtain with self-study (home study, online or webinars).
  • No more than a 1/3 of your total required hours may be academic, administrative, management or presentation hours with the remainder being direct patient care objectives. A copy of transcripts will be required for academic courses. Conference materials or letter from conference provider noting presentation is required for presentation hours (presentation time only, no preparation time, and the course may be used on one time for CE credit).
  • 10 Contact Hours = 1 Continuing Education Unit = 1 Academic Hour = 1 Professional Development Unit

Alaska Occupational Therapy license applicant for renewal of an occupational therapist or an occupational therapy assistant license who has been licensed for 12 months or more of the concluding licensing period shall have completed, during that period, 24 contact hours of continuing education. An applicant for renewal of an occupational therapist or an occupational therapy assistant license who has been licensed for less than 12 months of the concluding licensing period shall have
(1) completed, during that period, 12 contact hours of continuing education; or
(2) passed the national occupational therapy examination during the 12 months immediately before the date that the applicant’s license is due to lapse.

The following continuing education activities are approved for continuing education credit if they meet the requirements of (c) of this section:
(1) courses recognized by

  • The Alaska Occupational Therapy Association
  • The American Occupational Therapy Association;
  • The World Federation of Occupational Therapy

A licensee shall complete continuing education for renewal of a license as follows:

  1. Occupational Therapist, 20 clock-hours for renewal of a 2-year license; and
  2. Occupational Therapy Assistant, 12 clock-hours for renewal of a 2-year license.

A licensee shall complete the continuing education clock hours in subsection (A) within the 2-year period before the date the

licensee’s license expires, or if requesting a return to active status license, within the 2-year period before the date the licensee submits the return to active status request to the Board.

Continuing education shall contribute to professional competency and the practice of occupational therapy. The Board shall determine if continuing education hours contribute directly to the professional competency and if the continued education hours relate to the clinical practice of occupational therapy.

Ten hours per renewal period. The CEU’s must have been obtained between the first day following last year birth month through the last day of your current birth month. Random audits are performed monthly. If audited, certificates of completion are required to be submitted.

All continuing education program shall directly pertain to the profession of occupational therapy. The committee will not per-approve continuing education programs. Each licensee with sign his or her renewal application verifying that he or she has completed said 10 (ten) hours and will maintain for a period of 3 (three) years the proof of course taken.

Effective January 1, 2006, all occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants renewing a license or certificate in active status must certify that they completed the required number professional development units (PDUs) through participation in professional development activities.

The Board transitioned from an annual to a biennial renewal. As of January 2009, all renewing practitioners will need to complete 24 PDUs. The PDUs must be earned during the renewal period. Your renewal period begins the day after your license expires and ends on your expiration date. For example, if your license expires on October 31, 2009, your PDUs must have been completed during the period November 1, 2007 – October 31, 2009.

You do not need to submit documentation of your PDUs with your renewal form, however, you are required to maintain documentation for a period of four (4) years following the renewal period. You must submit the evidence of completion if you are audited by the Board. Failure to provide records documenting completion of the continued competency requirements is grounds for citation and fine or disciplinary action.

A list of activities that qualify can be found in the CCR Section 4161.

One half (1/2) of the required number of PDUs must be directly related to the delivery of occupational therapy services. The remaining units can be in other areas related to your practice. The Board does not require that you take courses from approved providers. The California Occupational Therapy Board does not approve courses for continuing competency. Twelve of the 24 units must be directly related to the delivery of OT services. The remaining units may include, but are not limited to, occupation based theory assessment/interview techniques, intervention strategies, and community/environment as related to your practice. All activities must be objectively measurable in terms of hours involved. You are also allowed to take online or home study courses, as long as a course completion certificate is provided.

If you earn more than the required number of PDUs within your renewal period, a maximum of six (6) PDUs may be carried to the next renewal period. You will be required certify that you completed the required number of units on your renewal form and list the activities on the back of the renewal form. You must maintain copies of course completion certificates and documentation of other activities completed for a period of four (4) years following the renewal period. The Board will conduct periodic random audits. Failure to complete continuing competency requirements or provide documentation during an audit can result in your license being placed on inactive status, a citation and fine, or other disciplinary action.

Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) is the Director of the Division of Professions and Occupations’ program through which a licensee will be able to satisfy continuing competency requirements in order to renew a license. For each renewal period, the CPD program will consist of the following elements:

  • A Reflective Self-Assessment Tool (RSAT) and establishment of learning goals
  • Execution of a Learning Plan; AND
  • Accrual and documentation of 24 Professional Development Activities (PDA). Retain documentation in the event of an audit of compliance.

PDA are learning activities undertaken to increase a licensee’s knowledge and skill or hone existing knowledge and skill for the purpose of continuing professional competency. PDA are equal to clock hours; one PDA is equal to one clock hour (60 minutes). PDA are organized into 8 categories: Coursework, Fieldwork Supervision, Group Study, Independent Learning, Mentoring, Presentations, Publishing, and Volunteer Service. A licensee must accrue a total of 24 PDA each renewal period. PDA must be earned through a minimum of 2 categories; no more than 12 PDA will be credited in any one category. Review the Program Manual for complete descriptions of the categories.

The Director does not preapprove specific courses or providers. A licensee will plan PDA to meet his/her Learning Plan and goals and select an appropriate provider(s). PDA must be relevant to occupational therapy and pertinent to Learning Plan and goals. All PDA must be completed during the renewal period and will only count for one renewal period. See the Program Manual for a list of required criteria for PDA.

Pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes and the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies (RSA), each licensee applying for license renewal shall complete a minimum of 24 contact hours of qualifying continued competency activity during the preceding two-year period for which the license is being renewed.  A contact hour is a minimum of 50 minutes of continued competency activity.

Continued competency activities completed in one registration period shall not be carried over to a subsequent registration period.  Please note that the Department does not review or approve individual courses or providers.

The activity involves face-to-face instruction or a home study program.  Home study program means continued competency activities clearly related to maintaining skills necessary for the safe and competent practice of occupational therapy that require successful completion of a proficiency examination, and may include distance learning and internet-based educational programs.

Each licensee shall obtain a certificate of completion for those activities properly completed, from the provider of continued competency activities.  Each licensee shall maintain written documentation of completion.   Certificates of completion and other required documentation shall be retained by the licensee for a minimum of three years following the license renewal due date for which the activity satisfies license renewal requirements.

Certificates of completion and other required documentation shall be submitted by the licensee to the department only upon the department’s request.  Such records shall be submitted to the department by the licensee within 45 days of the department’s request.  It is not necessary for the licensee to submit documentation of completion of the continuing competency activities in order to renew the license.

  • Continuing education (CE) is required for license renewal and shall be completed by July 31st of each even numbered year. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are required to complete 20 hours per biennial period. Continuing education must be earned in two (2) or more of the seven (7) categories for continuing education described in subsection 3.5.
  • Continuing education must be in a field of health and social services related to occupational therapy, must be related to a licensee’s current or anticipated roles and responsibilities in occupational therapy, and must directly or indirectly serve to protect the public by enhancing the licensee’s continuing competence.
  • Category 1: Courses: (Classroom or home study/correspondence/online) The maximum credit for course work shall not exceed nineteen (19) hours. Course work involving alternative therapies shall be limited to five (5) hours. Course work by home study, correspondence or online of a non-interactive nature shall be limited to ten (10) hours. Extension courses, refresher courses, workshops, seminars, lectures, conferences, and non patient-specific in-service training qualify under this provision as long as they are presented in a structured educational experience beyond entry-level academic degree level and satisfy the criteria in subsection 3.3.1.

An applicant for license renewal shall complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) contact hours of approved continuing education in accordance with §§ 6307 and 6308 during the two (2)-year period preceding the date the license expires. Beginning with the licensure term starting on October 1, 2017, the continuing education required in this section shall include two (2) hours of LGBTQ continuing education.

The continuing education contact hours completed to satisfy the requirement of § 6306.5 shall not be counted toward meeting the continuing education requirement for the next licensing period.

For the HIV/AIDS 1 Hours (for first renewal only) requirement, the board approves any course approved by any of the professions regulated within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance, the Department of Health.

Continuing education Hours can only be credited after one is licensed and within the current biennium dates in which they are taken.

Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants renewing a license for the first time and were licensed in the first half of the biennium (03/01/17 – 02/28/18) are required to complete all 26 as stated above, including the HIV/AIDS 1 Hours (for first renewal only) requirement. The board approves any course approved by any of the professions regulated within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance, the Department of Health.

Even though you were required to complete a 2 Hours course in prevention of medical errors for initial licensure purposes (if licensed before July 1, 2018), you must complete an additional 2 Hours in prevention of medical errors for each renewal.

No more than 12 Hours of home study courses are allowed. Home study education is independent study and requires a certificate of completion. Home study education does not include a web-based, satellite transmitted or on-line instruction program that allows or requires the licensee to interact or communicate back and forth with the instructor during the presentation of the program.

Note: 1 Hours = AOTA 0.1 CEU (10 Hours = AOTA 1.0 CEUs)

The Georgia State Board of Occupational Therapy requires each licensed OT and OTA to complete continuing education. A minimum 24 contact clock hours of continuing education is required for every renewal. Fourteen of the hours must relate to direct “hands on” patient care. Up to 12 hours may be obtained using on-line or home-study courses. The remaining hours can be in any contact area related to occupational therapy practice including but not limited to supervision, education, documentation, quality assurance, and administration. The Georgia State Board of Occupational Therapy requires each licensed OT and OTA to complete up to 2 hours in Ethics, every two years or per each renewal period. 

Licensees cannot obtain direct “hands on” continuing education credit from electronic or web based courses, formal self-study courses, satellite broadcasts, computer learning activities, webinars, or viewing videotapes in a professional setting. The licensee must be in attendance at a live presentation.

  • Every occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistant shall complete 24 contact hours of CE relevant to the practice of occupational therapy during each pre-renewal period as a condition of renewal.  A prerenewal period is the 24 months preceding December 31 in the year of the renewal.  24 contact hours of CE is equivalent to 12 units of Continued Competency Activities (CCA) (2 contact hours = 1 unit).
  • Regardless of delivery method, all CE hours must be earned by verified attendance or participation in a program that is offered by an approved CE sponsor who meets the requirements set forth in subsection (d), or by other CE activities set forth in subsection (c). This includes distance learning CE courses. Distance learning courses include, but are not limited to, web‑based courses, webinars, moderated teleconferences or audio cassettes, CDs or videos of professional presentations offered by approved sponsors.

  • During each two (2) year license period, an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant must complete at least eighteen (18) hours of continuing competency of which at least nine (9) hours must be in Category I courses.
  • Indiana Occupational Therapy Licensees (An occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant) may not earn more than nine (9) Category II credit hours towards the requirements under this section.
  • All eighteen (18) hours of the continuing competency requirements may be obtained through distance learning methods provided it is obtained from an approved provider.
  • Category I continuing competency courses include the following and must be at least one (1) contact hour in length: Formally organized courses.
    Workshops.
    Seminars.
    Symposia.
    Home study programs, including approved online or web-based, audio, and video instructional programs.
    Undergraduate or graduate courses from an accredited institution related to the management, practice, and education of occupational therapy.
  • Category II continuing competency activities include the following:Publications of books, articles, or films related to practice, management, or education of occupational therapy. A maximum of five (5) contact hours will be awarded under this subdivision.
    Preparation for teaching a course in occupational therapy in an accredited program. A maximum of six (6) contact hours will be awarded under this subdivision.
    Supervision of fieldwork for Level I and Level II students. One (1) contact hour will be awarded for every thirty-two (32) hours of supervision with a maximum of six (6) contact hours.
    In-house or in-service seminars specifically designed for training or teaching.
    Actively participating with professional organizations as an officer or committee chairperson.
    Supervising occupational therapy students when doing their observational hours as a pre-OT student applicant.
    Research activities other than publications and presentations.

The biennial continuing education compliance period shall extend for a two-year period that begins on the sixteenth day of the licensee’s birth month and ends two years later on the fifteenth day of the birth month.

Requirements for occupational therapist licensees. Each biennium, each person who is licensed to practice as an occupational therapist in this state shall be required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education approved by the board; a minimum of 20 hours shall be directly and primarily
related to the clinical application of occupational therapy.

Requirements for occupational therapy assistant licensees. Each biennium, each person who is licensed to practice as an occupational therapy assistant in this state shall be required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education approved by the board; a minimum of 10 hours shall be directly and primarily related to the clinical application of occupational therapy.

The Bureau of Professional Licensure does not pre-approve continuing education providers, sponsors or individual programs.  It is the licensees’ responsibility to determine if the continuing education programs they attend meet the requirements of their professional licensure board.

Each licensee shall submit evidence of completing at least 40 contact hours of continuing education during the preceding 24 months. Evidence of this attainment shall be submitted before or with the application for renewal in each odd-numbered year. No evidence of continuing education shall be required for license renewal in even-numbered years.

Class I: attendance at or participation in an education presentation. Class I continuing education experiences shall include the following types of education offerings: Other courses. An “other course” means a home study, correspondence, or internet course for which the provider of the activity evaluates the licensee’s knowledge of the subject matter presented in the continuing education activity.  A maximum of 20 contact hours may be acquired from other courses.

Each licensee shall submit documented evidence of attendance at, participation in, or presentation to class I and class II continuing education activities. Each licensee shall submit personal verification for class III activities. Copies of publications shall be submitted for verification of class IV activities. Verification of class VI fieldwork supervision shall be submitted by the licensee’s employer.

  • A licensee applying for license renewal shall complete a minimum of twelve (12) CCUs of qualified activities for maintaining continuing competence during the preceding annual renewal period.
  • A licensee who is issued a license for a period less than twelve (12) months shall prorate the number of CCUs to one (1) CCU for each month licensed.
  • An applicant for reinstatement or licensure who was previously licensed by the board and whose license has been put on inactive status, revoked, or expired for three (3) years or less from the time the application is filed shall obtain twelve (12) CCUs of qualified activities for maintaining continuing competence for each year in which the license has been in the status prior to receiving the license.
  • An applicant for licensure who was previously licensed by the board and whose license has lapsed for more than three (3) years shall obtain thirty-six (36) CCUs of qualified activities for maintaining continuing competence.
  • A licensee may earn one (1) CCU for each contact hour in continuing education courses including workshops, seminars, conferences, electronic courses, or self-study courses.
  • The board shall approve a course or provider of a course that is administered or approved by a recognized national (AOTA), state, or local occupational therapy association.

  • Subject to the exceptions specified in §1979 of this Subchapter, to be eligible for renewal of licensure an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant shall, within each year during which he or she holds licensure, evidence, and document in a manner prescribed by the board, the successful completion of not less than 12 contact hours, or 1.2 continuing education units (CEUs).
  • One CEU constitutes 10 hours of participation in an organized continuing professional education program approved by the board and meeting the standards prescribed in this Subchapter; one continuing professional education hour is equal to one-tenth of a CEU. Twelve hours, or 1.2 CEUs, is required to meet the standards prescribed by this Subchapter.
  • Self-study or independent study, to be acceptable as qualified continuing professional education under these rules, shall be sponsored or offered by the AOTA, by an AOTA approved provider, or the LOTA.

Administrative Rule R 338.1251: An applicant for license renewal who has been licensed for the 2-year period immediately preceding the expiration date of the license shall accumulate not less than 20 continuing education contact hours that are approved by the board pursuant to R 338.1252 during the 2 years preceding an application for renewal. A minimum of 10 hours must be completed in-person with live, synchronous contact and a minimum of 1 hour in pain and symptom management. Licensees renewing in 2019 must complete continuing education by renewal in 2021; renewals for 2020 by renewal in 2022, etc.

Human Trafficking requirement – Administrative Rule R 338.1215: Proof of completion of training to identify victims of human trafficking. This is a one-time training that is separate from continuing education (CE). Licensees renewing in 2018 must complete training by renewal in 2020; renewals for 2019 by 2021, and renewals for 2020 by 2022. Beginning October 19, 2022, completion of the training is a requirement for initial licensure.

A licensed occupational therapist must obtain a minimum of 24 contact hours of continuing education in the two-year licensure period. A licensed occupational therapy assistant must obtain a minimum of 18 contact hours of continuing education in the two-year licensure period. All continuing education coursework must be obtained between the effective date and expiration dates of the license. Licensees who are issued licenses for a period of less than two years shall obtain a prorated number of contact hours required for licensure renewal based on the number of months licensed during the two-year licensure period.

There is no authority or process for pre-approval of continuing education course work. Sponsors of CE and occupational therapy practitioners are responsible for following the requirements of MN Statute 148.6443 Continuing Education Requirements. Must be conducted by a sponsor approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association or by individuals who have education, training, and experience by reason of which the individuals should be considered experts on the subject matter of the activity.

Regulations set the requirement of 20 contact hours (CH) or 2 Continuing Education Units (CEU) to be accrued during the licensure period. No carryover of continuing education hours from one licensure period to another shall be allowed.  

At least 30 percent (6 Contact Hours or .6 CEU) of the required continuing education must be directly related to the clinical practice of occupational therapy. The six (6) contact hours related to clinical practice shall be live face-to-face training i.e., no internet training, video training, television training, etc. Of the remaining required 14 hours of training, 50 percent or 7 hours may be non live face-to-face training. Non live training may include home study courses, video, internet, etc. All training shall be from approved sources.

Attendance at educational programs where continuing education credit is given and approved by a licensure authority of any jurisdiction in the United States for occupational therapy.

At the time of license renewal, the licensee shall verify completion of twenty-four (24) Continuing Competency Credits (CCC) on the renewal form. Failure to note verification of completion shall result in the license  not  being  renewed.

On or before the August 1 of each even numbered year the credential holder must:

Complete 20 hours of continuing education during the preceding 24 month period if an occupational therapist; Complete 15 hours of continuing education during the preceding 24 month period if an occupational therapy assistant; and Be responsible for:

  1. Maintaining until the next renewal period documentation of attendance at, or participation in, continuing education programs/activities and the program outline and/or objectives; and
  2. Maintaining documentation of presentation of a continuing education program if the licensee is presenting a program.

The Board does not pre-approve continuing education programs but will accept as continuing education for renewal of a license or reinstatement of a license the following continuing education activities:

  1. Programs at State and National association meetings (for example, a meeting of the Nebraska or other state occupational therapy associations and/or the American Occupational Therapy Association) A licensee’s documentation must include a certificate of attendance, and a program outline and/or objectives;
  2. Workshops, seminars, webinars and/or conferences where the content of the continuing education activity relates to occupational therapy whether the subject is research, treatment, documentation, or education management, which includes monitored videotapes, and in-service programs. A licensee’s documentation must include a certificate of attendance, and a program outline and/or objectives;

  • Except as otherwise provided in subsection 4 and NAC 640A.101, a person with an active license shall complete, to the satisfaction of the Board, at least 12 hours of continuing education per year. If the licensee obtains more than 12 hours of continuing education in a year, he or she may request that the Board carry over a maximum of 10 hours to apply towards completion of his or her requirement for continuing education for the following renewal period.
  • Activities that qualify as continuing education include, without limitation: Participation in a course of self-study that requires a formal assessment of learning: (1) Which includes, without limitation, self-study through an electronic or Internet-based course, a self-paced clinical course or any other formalized self-administered course; and (2) Which is afterwards followed by the submission of a certificate of completion or other similar document and a completed form to be provided by the Board, which will include, without limitation, a narrative statement that describes how the activity broadens the person’s knowledge of occupational therapy or relates to current or anticipated roles and responsibilities of the person in the practice of occupational therapy;

  • Every licensed occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistant must earn a minimum of twenty (20) continuing education contact hours per year during each year of licensure.
  • A maximum of twenty (20) contact hours may be carried over.
  • Continuing education contact hours must be earned prior to license renewal the following year.
  • The first year during which twenty (20) contact hours must be earned is the year beginning on October 1st following license issuance and ending on the following September 30th. 
  • Continuing education hours are not required until the new licensee has been licensed for a full year. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants licensed during the first year will be expected to pay the annual renewal fee and may submit continuing education contact hours for carryover for the following renewal period.

  • Effective February 13, 2013, to renew your registration as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant, New York State Education Law requires completion of 36 contact hours of approved continuing competency within each three-year renewal period. However, these requirements will be phased in during the first three years, therefore, only requiring one-half hour of continuing competency for each month beginning in March 2013 through February 2016, for those registrants whose three-year renewal period falls within this time frame. Commencing with March 2016, registrants will be required to complete the full 36 hours of continuing competency. The complete standards for continuing competency for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants can be found in section 76.10 of the Commissioner’s Rules and Regulations. 
  • Effective February 13, 2013, to renew your registration as an occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistant, New York State Education Law requires the completion of 36 hours of continuing education during each 3-year registration period. However, if your renewal date falls between 3/1/13 through 1/31/16, you will only be required to complete a portion of the required competency hours. Please see pro-rate chart below.

    Please Note: A New York Occupational Therapy licensee seeking registration as both an occupational therapist AND occupational therapy assistant must complete a total of 72 hours in compliance with the requirements for both registrations.

  • Formal Academic Study, Continuing Education Courses, and/or Workshops: Courses, workshops, or seminars offered by an approved continuing education sponsor, credit-bearing academic study offered by an accredited college or university, or in-service training programs offered by an employer to its employees, or self-study. Self study is structured study based on audio, audio-visual, written, on-line and other media. In service training programs and self-study must be offered by an approved sponsor. No more than two-thirds (24 hours) of the continuing competency requirement may be completed through self-study.
  • A sponsor of coursework or training that is approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), or the New York State Occupational Therapy Association (NYSOTA), or the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), or an equivalent organization as determined by the Department.

North Carolina Occupational Therapy Continuing Continuing Competence Activities (CCA) Requirements: Click Here

  • CCA must be completed by June 30th of the renewal year.  CCA must be related to roles and responsibilities in occupational therapy and must serve to protect the public by enhancing the licensee’s continuing competence, in providing occupational therapy services.
  • Occupational therapists and occupation therapy assistants applying for license renewal shall document having earned a minimum of 15 points for approved continuing competence activities.
  • Includes attendance and participation at a live presentation such as a workshop, seminar, conference, or in-service educational program. May also include participation in other continuing education activities that require a formal assessment of learning. Examples include electronic or Web-based courses, AOTA Self-Paced Clinical Courses or other formalized self-study courses, or AOTA Continuing Education Articles.
  • Ethics Requirement: Rule .0802(b) states for each renewal period, each licensee shall document completion of at least one contact hour (one point) of an ethics course related to the practice of occupational therapy. The one point may be included in the total of the required point total for the renewal period. The ethics course must meet the requirements for continuing competence activity found in Rules Section .0800 (Rules .0801 – .0808). Additionally, whoever presents the course must meet the requirements of Rule .0803(b). It may not be an in-service offered by a co-employee who attended an ethics course. Enter your ethics activity in the CCA category Ethics regardless of what category of CCA it belongs. This allows the computer to recognize it as your ethics requirement.

  • How to calculate your continuing education activity: 1 contact hour is one clock hour spent in a continuing education activity. Occupational therapists are required to complete a minimum of 20 contact hours per renewal cycle.
  • Licensees are required to complete at least one contact hour of ethics education per renewal.
  • Licensees can meet the ethics requirement by successfully passing the “Occupational Therapy Licensure Law Test” at https://ohiootptatboard.myicourse.com .
  • If your initial licensure by examination was granted within 12 months of graduation from an entry level occupational therapist program, you are exempt from providing proof of your continuing education activity. However, you are still required to renew your license.
  • If your initial licensure by endorsement was valid for12 months or less, you are required to complete a minimum of 10 contact hours. Your continuing education reporting period would be two years prior to your current expiration date.
  • If this is your first renewal after reinstating or restoring your Ohio license, and
    Your license was valid for 12 months or less, you are required to complete a minimum of 10 contact hours.
    Your license was valid greater than 12 months, you are required to complete a minimum of 20 contact hours.
  • Your continuing education reporting period would be two years prior to your current expiration date. Continuing education activities used to reinstate or restore your license cannot be used towards any other renewal periods.
  • Acceptable continuing education activities may include (Link): Credit is obtained by attending presentations that have either been sponsored or approved by the occupational therapy section, the American occupational therapy association (AOTA), the Ohio occupational therapy association, offered by an AOTA approved provider.

  • Continuing education is due October 31 every even year. You must obtain twenty (20) hours of approved continuing education every two (2) years (i.e. from November 1, 2014 to October 31, 2016, etc.). No hours may be carried over from the previous reporting period.
  • Traditional method of points/value/documentation: Programs offered by or approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association or the Oklahoma Occupational Therapy Association or the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
  • Documentation: Verification of attendance and copies of supporting documentation such as program brochure, syllabus, etc. If unable to verify attendance, use Form B Verification of Conference Attendance, attach a copy of receipt for conference fee and statement of relevancy to practice of Occupational Therapy if not obvious from the program materials.

  • 339-020-0010 CE Requirements for Current Licensees
    (1) All current licensees shall obtain a minimum of 30 points of CE from Board approved categories during the two years immediately preceding the date of the license renewal; or
    (2) The Board recognizes the maintenances of continuous professional development hours as evidenced by current NBCOT Certification (National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy) as fulfilling the requirements for CE under (1).
  • The Board does not pre-approve CE.  Licensees should look to the CE definition and determine whether the courses relate to OT practice and be prepared to demonstrate how the credit relates if requested.
  • You will have no problem if your continuing education comes from educational sessions relating to occupational therapy sponsored by OTAO, AOTA, AOTA approved providers, and NBCOT or professional academic institutions relating to occupational therapy.  You can receive one point per hour of attendance, with documentation.

Beginning with the July 1, 2013—June 30, 2015, biennium, an occupational therapist shall complete a minimum of 24 contact hours in each biennial period in acceptable continued competency activities listed in §  42.55 (relating to acceptable continued competency activities) as a condition of licensure renewal.

An occupational therapist is exempt from complying with subsection (a) for the first biennial renewal following initial licensure.

An occupational therapist seeking to reactivate a lapsed or inactive license shall show compliance with the continued competency contact hour requirement during the 2-year period immediately preceding application for reactivation.

As a condition of reinstatement, an occupational therapist whose license has been suspended or revoked shall complete the required continued competency contact hours for each licensure biennium in which the license was suspended or revoked.

The Board has pre-approved educational courses provided, co-provided or approved by the following entities: A provider approved by another health licensing board within the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs or another State licensure board (Biologix Solutions LLC is approved by Florida and Alabama OT Board.)

  • Conferences, workshops, and seminars (C): Proof of attendance to include an original certificate, or notarized copy, with participant’s name, date, location, course title, presenter(s) and number of program contact hours are needed. If all of this information is not located on the certificate of attendance, then additional materials must be maintained. The licensee may submit a true, certified copy in lieu of the original certificates. Often this information can be found on the program brochure. Conferences, which are sponsored by an organization and have many presenters, do not need to list all presenters’ names, but the sponsor’s name must be on the certificate of attendance in place of individual presenters. Formal self-study with testing through an agency may be counted in this category. Unlimited hours are allowed.
  • These offerings have established amounts of credit already attributed to them. This includes on line courses. There is no limit set on the number of self-study hours used for continuing education credit; however, the SCBOT recommends a critical selection process to promote optimum learning. Please note: the Regulations governing the Board do not permit acceptance of credit for independent reading, peer review, or related studies, as is accepted by other organizations such as NBCOT.

Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants are required to complete twenty-four (24) continued competence credits for the two (2) calendar years (January 1 – December 31) that precede the licensure renewal year.

The Board does not pre-approve continued competence activities. It is the responsibility of the licensed occupational therapist and occupational therapist assistant to use his/her professional judgment in determining whether or not the activities are applicable and appropriate to his/her professional development and meet the standards specified in these rules.

Approved Continued Competence Activity Providers includes State occupational therapy associations and State occupational therapy regulatory agencies.

  • Texas OT and OTA licensees are legally required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education each renewal period in order to maintain licensure. Licensees may earn more than the required minimum of CE hours. Refer to Chapter 367 of the OT Rules for further CE information and requirements.
  • Educational activities that meet the requirements in Chapter 367 of the OT Rules that are approved or offered by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or the Texas Occupational Therapy Association (TOTA) are pre-approved by the Board. Licensees are responsible for choosing CE that meets requirements as per Chapter 367, regardless of the activity’s provider or pre-approved status.
  • All activities claimed for CE credit including those approved or offered by AOTA or TOTA must meet the requirements in Chapter 367 and may not be an unacceptable activity as per §367.1(a)(2).
  • Licensees are not required to take pre-approved courses.
  • Continuing education must be completed before the end of the birth month in the year the license expires, with enough time to complete the renewal process before the expiration. CE completed during the renewal period may be counted. Continuing education may not be carried over from one license renewal to the next.
  • Active status licensees may renew their licenses online up to approximately 3 months prior to the end of their birth month.

Continuing education required by Subsection 58-42a-302.5(1) shall consist of 24 hours of qualified continuing professional education in each preceding two-year period of licensure or prior to reinstatement of licensure.  Each hour of continuing professional education may include a 10-minute break.

“Continuing competence” means the direct involvement of an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant as a participant in activities promoting continuing competency in occupational therapy theory and practice. A total of 20 hours of continuing competence shall be earned in a two year renewal period. All Vermont Occupational Therapy licensees (occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant) who is renewing his or her license for the first time after initial licensure is subject to a 10 hour continuing competence requirement per full year of licensure. If the license has been held for one year or less, no continuing competence is required. If held mare than one year but less than two years, ten hours is required.

  • With the renewal of licensure in 2004. You will be required to sign an attestation on your renewal form in 2004 that you have completed 20 hours of continued competency activities. Falsification on the renewal form is a violation of law and may subject you to disciplinary action.
  • Type 1 hours (at least 10 each biennium) are those activities offered by a sponsor or organization recognized by the profession and may include in-service training, self-study courses, specialty certification or professional workshops. All 20 continued competency hours each biennium may be Type 1 hours.
  • Type 2 hours (no more than 10 each biennium) are those activities, which may include consultation with another therapist, independent reading or research, preparation for a presentation, fieldwork with students, or other such experiences, which promote continued learning.
  • A sponsor or organization recognized by the profession would most likely include any member organizations/associations, accredited hospitals, occupational therapy accredited schools/programs, school systems, rehabilitation centers, or employer. Documentation of completion could be a certificate or letter to include the name of the sponsor or organization, dates of activity, description of activity and total number of contact hours completed.

To renew an occupational therapy practitioner license, you must have 30 hours of continuing competency every two years. Occupational therapy practitioners must have completed this requirement by their birth date every two years. The continuing competency must have been obtained during the preceding two years, from birth date to birth date. Continuing competency hours cannot be carried over to the next reporting period.
 
The board does not pre-approve continuing competency courses for presenters or licensees. The 30 contact hours may be obtained through two or more of the following methods which have specified goals and objectives relating to the practice of occupational therapy as defined in RCW 18.59.020 and WAC 246-847-010; inservices, coursework, conferences, workshops, peer reviewed self study, presentations or publications.

  • Continuing education. The purpose and intent of continuing education in occupational therapy is to assure the public of the expectation and obligation that practitioners maintain currency, knowledge levels and professional competence. Wisconsin Occupational Therapy Licensees (Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants) shall complete continuing education as follows:
    (1) Each holder of a license as an occupational therapist shall, at the time of applying for renewal of a license of registration under s. 448.967, Stats., certify that he or she has, in the 2 years preceding the renewal application, completed at least 24 points of acceptable continuing education.
    (2) Each holder of a license as an occupational therapy assistant shall, at the time of applying for renewal of a license of registration under s. 448.967, Stats., certify that he or she has, in the 2 years preceding the renewal application, completed at least 24 points of acceptable continuing education.
    (3) At least 12 of the points shall be accumulated through professional development activities related to occupational therapy in the following categories set forth in the following table. – See PDF for table PDF
    Note: “Contact hour” as used in the table means not less than 50 minutes of actual professional activity.
    (4) Evidence of compliance with this section such as certificates of completion shall be retained by each license holder through the biennium following the biennium for which credit is required for renewal of license.
    (5) The board may require any license holder to submit evidence of compliance with this section to the board for an audit at any time during the biennium following the biennium for which credit is required for license renewal.
    (6) During the time between initial licensure and commencement of a full 2-year licensure period, new licensees shall not be required to meet continuing education requirements.
    (7) A licensee may apply to the board for a postponement or waiver of the requirements of this section on the grounds of prolonged illness, disability, or other grounds constituting hardship. The board shall consider each request individually on its merits and may grant a postponement, partial waiver, or total waiver of the requirements.
  • Satisfactory completion of a self−study course approved by the American occupational therapy association (AOTA) or other related recognized professional associations.

NBCOT Certification Professional Development Units:

NBCOT Accepts AOTA Approved Provider for Professional Development Units. NBCOT Certification Requirements: 36 Units Per Three Year Period.

NBCOT certification is granted for a three-year period. Certificants who complete all certification renewal requirements by their scheduled renewal date will be granted Active in Good Standing certification status for another three-year period. The certification renewal season occurs between January and March annually, regardless of the month initial certification was received. Certificants who do not submit their certification renewal application by the scheduled renewal date will have their certification status changed to Non compliant-Inactive. An individual who has Non compliant-Inactive certification cannot use the OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST REGISTERED OTR® or CERTIFIED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT COTA® certification mark.

Accrue the 36 required units during the three-year renewal cycle. 36 units (1 hour = 1.25 units) can be successfully completed education (e.g., workshops, seminars, lectures, online courses, or conference) with an assessment component at the end of the program (e.g., scored test, project, paper) provided by: AOTA, AOTA-approved providers, IACET-authorized providers, or Regionally accredited colleges/universities.

A certificate of attendance or a letter from the education provider (AOTA, AOTA-approved providers, IACET-authorized providers or regionally accredited colleges/universities) verifying dates, event title, attendee name, agenda and successful completion of assessment component at the end of the program (e.g., scored test, project, paper).
