Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training is a specialized program tailored for body artists. It ensures compliance with essential regulations, including OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030), CalOSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (Section 5193 of Title 8 CCR), and California’s Safe Body Art Act (AB 300, H & S Section 119307). Led by a seasoned infectious disease professional with over 22 years of experience in both the body art sector and public health, this training offers valuable insights and practical knowledge. The course spans a comprehensive 3 hours (with a minimum legal requirement of 2 hours) and delves into critical topics specific to the body art industry. Participants will learn about bloodborne pathogens, the associated risks, and the best practices for preventing their transmission. They will also better understand other highly contagious skin infections and infectious diseases. Through this training, body artists will be better equipped to maintain safe, hygienic practices in their work environment, ultimately safeguarding their health and their clients’.

Upon completion of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training course, participants will be able to:

  • Review the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, as found in Section 5193 of Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations or its successor.
  • Examine the state, city, county, or local body art act.
  • Discuss the transmission, control, and symptoms of diseases caused by bloodborne pathogens.
  • Analyze the tasks involved in performing body art and their potential exposure risks to clients and practitioners regarding bloodborne pathogens.
  • Identify the types and uses of Personal Protective Equipment (e.g., gloves, aprons, bibs, masks, and eye protection), including their limitations, proper usage techniques, and the correct order of operations for donning and doffing it to prevent contamination.
  • Elaborate on the significance of hand hygiene and demonstrate appropriate hand hygiene techniques.
  • Discuss the selection, application, and storage of disinfectants and antiseptics specific to Bloodborne pathogens.
  • Review the signage requirements for biohazard materials and the importance of accurately labeling chemicals and supplies.
  • Present information on the hepatitis B vaccine, focusing on safety and accessibility.
  • Define what constitutes a bloodborne pathogen exposure incident and outline the procedure for responding to such an incident, including medical follow-up and actions to prevent or minimize future exposures.

 

Teaching Method: An online, text-based self-study course with a post-test. This format is ideal for those who prefer independent learning at their own pace, without audio or video. Participants engage with written materials, creating a focused, distraction-free learning environment. The course also includes an assessment to evaluate understanding and retention. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass and receive a certificate of completion.
