The “Bloodborne Pathogens for Tattoo Artists and Piercers” course provides essential training specifically designed for professionals in the body art industry, in accordance with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030). Developed by an expert with extensive experience in both body art and public health, this course offers a detailed exploration of the risks associated with bloodborne pathogens. Throughout the program, participants will engage with comprehensive materials that address the unique challenges faced by tattoo artists and piercers. The curriculum emphasizes the most current techniques for preventing the transmission of bloodborne pathogens and other contagious diseases. By the end of the course, attendees will have a thorough understanding of safety protocols, best practices, and effective methods for protecting themselves and their clients safely and professionally.
Upon completion of the course “Bloodborne Pathogens for Tattoo Artists and Piercers,” participants will be able to:
- Review the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030.
- Discuss the transmission, control, and symptoms of diseases caused by bloodborne pathogens.
- Identify the tasks involved in performing body art and the potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens for both clients and practitioners.
- Explain the types and uses of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including gloves, aprons, bibs, masks, and eye protection; their limitations; proper techniques for use; and the correct order of tasks for donning and removing PPE to avoid contamination.
- Emphasize the importance of hand hygiene and demonstrate proper hand hygiene techniques.
- Discuss the choice, use, and storage of disinfectants and antiseptics specific to bloodborne pathogens.
- Identify the required signage for biohazardous materials and the importance of proper labeling for chemicals and supplies.
- Review information on the hepatitis B vaccine, including its safety and accessibility.
- Define what constitutes a bloodborne pathogen exposure incident and outline the procedures to follow after such an incident, including medical follow-up and actions to prevent or minimize future exposures.
Course Format: An online, text-based self-study course with a post-test. This format is ideal for those who prefer independent learning at their own pace, without audio or video. Participants engage with written materials, creating a focused, distraction-free learning environment. The course also includes an assessment to evaluate understanding and retention. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass and receive a certificate of completion.
