The Bloodborne Pathogens Training course for Minnesota Body Art Professionals is tailored to the specific needs of the body art industry and is in accordance with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29CFR 1910.1030). Developed by an expert in body art and public health, this training provides participants with the knowledge they need. It covers key topics, including preventing bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases, and offers industry-specific strategies and best practices to promote safety. The course highlights the importance of safety protocols, risk assessment, and hygiene practices essential for protecting both practitioners and clients in the body art field.
Upon completion of the Bloodborne Pathogens Training for Minnesota Body Art Professionals course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the purpose of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and its application to the body art industry, highlighting the necessity for bloodborne pathogens and infection control training for tattooing, piercing, and permanent makeup artists.
- Review medical and health issues associated with the body art industry.
- Recognize how cross-contamination and contact transmission can occur in shops.
- Identify bloodborne pathogens (HIV, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus) and selected communicable diseases (Hepatitis A, Staphylococcus aureus infections, including MRSA, Tuberculosis, Impetigo, Scabies, Ringworm, Molluscum Contagiosum, Herpes Simplex, and Herpes Zoster) along with:
- Identification of the disease
- Description of the infectious agent
- Mode of transmission
- Incubation period
- Period of communicability
- Prevention of transmission in the tattoo establishment
- Understand the minimum operational requirements regarding sanitary and safety aspects of tattoo and temporary establishments.
- Know Standard Precautions and the personal protective equipment available to prevent the transmission of bloodborne pathogens and common skin infections.
- Comprehend the fundamentals of infection control, including sterilization by autoclave and aseptic techniques to prevent disease transmission in tattoo establishments.
- Identify the steps to take following an exposure incident.
Teaching Method: An online, text-based self-study course with a post-test. This format is ideal for those who prefer independent learning at their own pace, without audio or video. Participants engage with written materials, creating a focused, distraction-free learning environment. The course also includes an assessment to evaluate understanding and retention. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass and receive a certificate of completion.

It fulfills 5 hours of Bloodborne Pathogens, Prevention of Disease Transmission, and Infection Technique Training. BBP coursework must be completed within the year preceding the initial application or renewal.
