The Ethics and Professional Responsibility course is designed to provide physical therapy professionals with a thorough understanding of their moral, ethical, and legal obligations. This comprehensive program covers essential topics, including the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Code of Ethics, a foundational framework for professional conduct, and the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs). To enhance decision-making skills, the curriculum introduces a structured ethical decision-making model and includes real-world case analyses, allowing participants to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations. This holistic approach empowers professionals to effectively navigate ethical dilemmas and maintain the integrity of their practice.
Upon completion of the “Ethics Laws and Rules (Jurisprudence) for Hawaii Physical Therapy” course, you will be able to:
- Define Ethics and Morality.
- Identify the basic similarities and differences between ethics and morals.
- Define ethics and differentiate among the theories that promote ethical behavior.
- Define the principles of the ethical decision-making model.
- Understand the ethical decision-making process.
- Interpret and apply the most recent APTA Code of Ethics for the PTs and PTAs as tools for ethical decision-making.
- Interpret and apply the APTA’s Guide for Professional Conduct for the Physical Therapist and the Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Interpret and apply APTA’s core values, which guide the behavior of PTs and PTAs, to provide the highest-quality physical therapy services.
- Define the parameters of informed consent.
- Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate relationships.
- Define conflict of interest.
- Demonstrate through case analysis the ability to identify ethical conflicts and support a resolution to an ethical dilemma.
- Review five case studies using the RIPS Model (Realm-Individual Process-Situation) as a structured framework for ethical decision-making.
- Review Hawaii Physical Therapy Practice Act — HRS Chapter 461J – Physical Therapy, and Review Hawaii Administrative Rules 16-110-C Physical Therapy – DCCA.
