The Ethics and Jurisprudence for Tennessee Physical Therapy course provides Tennessee physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) with an understanding of ethics and jurisprudence as they relate to professional practice. Participants will learn the American Physical Therapy Association’s ethical codes and core values, as well as strategies for resolving ethical dilemmas in clinical practice. This course also explores challenges and best practices for more complex ethical scenarios related to telehealth, cultural humility, patient refusal, and cognitive impairment. In the second half of the course, participants will learn Tennessee-specific laws and rules, including the Physical Therapy Practice Act (TN Code Title 63, Chapter 13), the General Rules Governing the Practice of Physical Therapy (TN Administrative Rules, Chapter 1150-01), and the Board of Physical Therapy’s policy statements.
Upon completion of the Ethics and Jurisprudence for Tennessee Physical Therapy course, you will be able to:
- Define Ethics and Morality.
- Identify the basic similarities and differences between ethics and morals.
- Define ethics and differentiate among the theories that promote ethical behavior.
- Define the principles of the ethical decision-making model.
- Understand the ethical decision-making process.
- Interpret and apply the most recent APTA Code of Ethics for the PTs and PTAs as tools for ethical decision-making.
- Interpret and apply the APTA’s Guide for Professional Conduct for the Physical Therapist and the Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Interpret and apply the APTA’s core values that guide the behavior of PTs and PTAs to provide the highest quality of physical therapy services.
- Define the parameters of informed consent.
- Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate relationships.
- Define conflict of interest.
- Demonstrate through case analysis the ability to identify ethical conflicts and support a resolution to an ethical dilemma.
- Review five case studies using the RIPS Model (Realm-Individual Process-Situation) as a structured framework for ethical decision-making.
- Explain the purpose of the Tennessee Practice Act and its associated regulations.
- Analyze the Tennessee Physical Therapy (PT) Practice Act, specifically Title 63, Chapter 13, Parts 1 and 3.
- Examine the General Rules of PT Practice as outlined in Chapter 1150-01.
- Review the policies and position statements issued by the Tennessee Board of Physical Therapy, including Key Policies & Positions that are no longer valid as of December 29, 2025.

Tennessee Requirements: For both physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, four (4) of the required hours must consist of ethics and jurisprudence courses, each a minimum of two (2) hours, and must be Category 1 continuing competence. Proof of completion of ethics and jurisprudence courses is required at every license renewal cycle.
Teaching Method: An online, text-based self-study course with a post-test. This format is ideal for those who prefer independent learning at their own pace, without audio or video. Participants engage with written materials, creating a focused, distraction-free learning environment. The course also includes an assessment to evaluate understanding and retention. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass and receive a certificate of completion.
