Medical errors are a leading cause of patient deaths each year, affecting not only patients and their families but also healthcare professionals and facilities. These errors can result in serious morbidity and mortality, underscoring the need for improved practices in healthcare. This course provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of medical errors, including their types, risk factors, and reporting mechanisms. A strong emphasis is placed on prevention strategies, offering practical advice for practitioners and healthcare organizations. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with insights to effectively reduce medical errors and enhance the quality of patient care.
Upon completion of the Reducing Medical Errors course, participants will be able to:

- Analyze Florida’s initiatives to reduce and prevent medical errors and enhance patient safety.

- Recognize factors that increase the risk of medical errors.
- Explore prevention strategies for medical errors in special needs populations.
- Review recommendations to reduce or eliminate medical errors.
- Understand the importance of promptly reporting errors to improve patient safety, including the responsibilities of healthcare providers.
- Conduct a Root Cause Analysis to identify potential changes in systems and processes that could improve performance and reduce the recurrence of adverse events.
- Assess the role of electronic medical records (EMRs) and other information technologies in enhancing communication and patient safety in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
- Review public education and awareness measures related to patient safety.

Teaching Methods: An online, text-based self-study course with a post-test. This format is ideal for those who prefer independent learning at their own pace, without audio or video. Participants engage with written materials, creating a focused, distraction-free learning environment. The course also includes an assessment to evaluate understanding and retention. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass and receive a certificate of completion.
