This continuing education course, “Pain Management in Dentistry: Prescribing Controlled Substances,” aims to provide dental healthcare professionals with evidence-based knowledge on using analgesics for pain management. Participants will learn strategies for addressing acute and chronic pain and explore related issues that can arise during dental procedures. The course highlights the responsibility of dental professionals in combating prescription drug abuse and outlines best practices for managing controlled substances, especially following recent changes in opioid classifications. Participants will gain insights into improving their prescribing practices, ultimately enhancing patient safety and community well-being.
Upon completing the Pain Management in Dentistry course, you will be able to:
- Review definitions and mechanisms of pain.
- Differentiate between acute and chronic pain.
- Understand the delivery of anesthetics and the management of post-procedural pain.
- Explore methods of pain control in dentistry.
- Recognize warnings and precautions associated with analgesic medications.
- List non-pharmacological methods for addressing pain.
- Review pain management in special populations.
- Understand proper dosages for analgesic medications for both adult and pediatric patients.
- Examine drugs and substances classified as Schedule II/IIN Controlled Substances under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
- Review regulatory requirements for prescribers and dispensers, including record-keeping for prescribing, dispensing, and storing controlled substances (Schedule II/IIN).
- Discuss strategies to minimize the diversion and abuse of controlled substances by patients and dental office staff.
- Review procedures for managing patients with vulnerabilities or substance use disorders in a dental office setting.
