Michigan Dental CE Requirements

Michigan Dental Continuing Education Requirements:

The Michigan Public Health Code and board administrative rules require Dentists to complete continuing education as follows: Click Here

A renewal applicant who has been licensed for the 3-year period immediately preceding the expiration date of the license must complete not less than 60 hours of board-approved continuing education.

Possess current certification in basic or advanced cardiac life support from an agency or organization that grants certification pursuant to standards substantially equivalent to the standards adopted in R 338.11705.

Dentists:

Up to 10 hours may be obtained by reading articles, magazines, etc., that are related to dentistry. You should document what you read, keeping the article if possible, and how long it took you to read it.

A minimum of 20 hours must be done in a classroom setting or in-person seminar, or by watching a live webinar that features an interactive segment. Recorded webinars do not qualify as classroom credit.

Up to 30 hours of CE may be done online and through recorded webinars. Be sure the courses are approved by the ADA, AGD, or Michigan Board of Dentistry.

Three hours of the required 60 credits must be in pain management.

One hour in dental ethics and jurisprudence with inclusion of delegation of duties to allied dental personnel. NOTE: The new requirements must be met before any renewal on or after April 26, 2022.

One hour in infection control, which must include sterilization of hand pieces, personal protective equipment, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s infection control guidelines. NOTE: NOTE: The new requirements must be met before any renewal on or after April 26, 2022.

A one-time, one-hour course in human trafficking recognition is required.

A one-time, one-hour course in opioid training is required in order to renew your state controlled substance license.

Additional Requirements

CPR: In addition to the required 60 CE credits, dentists must also carry a current Basic Life Support CPR card at all times. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs requires a dentist possess current certification in basic or advanced cardiac life support obtained from an agency or organization that grants certification pursuant to standards substantially equivalent to the standards adopted in the Michigan Board of Dentistry Rule R 338.11705(03). How the training is conducted (in-person or online) can be determined by the certification-issuing organization. Because CPR is a general education requirement, no CE credit is not granted for CPR courses.

RDA/RDH

(Three-year renewal requirements for Continuing Education.)

RDAs/RDHs are required to complete a minimum of 36 credit hours of CE over a three-year period. CE credits can be earned in the following ways:

Up to 10 hours can be obtained FREE by reading articles, magazines, etc. that are related to dentistry. Document what you read (keep the article if possible) and how long it took you to read it.

Minimum of 12 hours have to be done in a classroom setting, or by watching LIVE webinars. Live webinars that are being watched after the live session has ended (IE watching it a week after it originally was broadcast) do not qualify as classroom credit, only as online.

Up to 18 hours can be done online (courses must be approved by ADA, AGD or MI Board of Dentistry to qualify).

Two hours of the 36 credits required must be in pain management.

NOTE: The new requirements must be met before any renewal on or after April 26, 2022. Visit the CE Courses section for courses meeting these requirements.

A one-time, one-hour course in human trafficking recognition is required.

RDA/RDH Specific Courses: 12 of your 36 hours/credits must be related to your specific credentials (RDA or RDH).

Additional Requirements

CPR: In addition to the required 36 CE credits, RDAs/RDHs must also carry a current Basic Life Support CPR card at all times.

Implicit Bias Training Requirements:

New Applicants for licensure or registration are required to have completed 2 hours of implicit bias training within the 5 years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration.

Renewing licensees and registrants are required to complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle. However, for initial renewal after June 1, 2021, licensees will only need to have 1 hour for each year since the rule’s promulgation date of June 1, 2021.

For example, if you are scheduled to renew your license in August of 2022, you would only be required to have 1 hour of training, even if the length of your license was 3 years. If permitted by the Public Health Code and rules for your profession, this training may be used to satisfy other training or continuing education requirements. Subsequent renewals will require 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of the license or registration cycle.
