Illinois Physical Therapy Licensure Renewal Deadline – September 30, 2018! – Your professional license expires September 30th, which means that you need to complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) prior to that date in order to renew.

According to the Rules for the Administration of the Illinois Physical Therapy Act, Section 1340.61 Continuing Education,

Every physical therapist shall complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) relevant to the practice of physical therapy during each prerenewal period as a condition of renewal.  Beginning with the September 2016 renewal, at least 3 hours of the 40 hours must include content related to the ethical practice of physical therapy.

Every physical therapist assistant shall complete 20 hours of CE relevant to the practice of physical therapy during each renewal period as a condition of renewal.  Beginning with the September 2017 renewal, at least 3 hours of the 20 hours must include content related to the ethical practice of physical therapy.

A prerenewal period is the 24 months preceding September 30 in the year of the renewal.

In order for a course to count, it must have been (one of the following):

Any course offered APTA and any of its chapters and sections (including Illinois) and FSBPT counts.

Any individual course approved by IPTA or FSBPT counts.

Any course offered by a CE sponsor that is licensed through IDFPR to offer PT courses counts.

Any course offered by a college, university, or community college with a PT or PTA education programs that is CAPTE accredited counts.

For Physical Therapists, licenses expire on September 30th of each even year.

For Physical Therapist Assistants, licenses expire on September 30th of each odd year.

Self-study: A maximum of 50% of the total CE requirements may be earned through the self-study activities: An Illinois Physical Therapy license applicant may obtain up to 20 hours of CE credit by taking correspondence or web-based courses from an approved CE sponsor. These courses shall include a test that must be passed in order to obtain credit.

Upon arriving at the Renewal page you must choose to renew for a Physical Therapist License Renewal or a Physical Therapist Assistant License Renewal by clicking the appropriate profession on the right side bar. (https://www.idfpr.com/renewals/defaultssl.asp).

  • You may choose to renew online by credit card payment.
  • You may choose to renew over the telephone with a credit card payment and PIN number. If you do not know your PIN, you may look on your renewal application to find it. If you do not have a renewal application, you can print it.
  • You may print a renewal application form to locate your PIN or to renew by mail.

Implicit Bias Training requirements for Illinois

Starting January 1, 2023, health care professionals in Illinois will need to complete a one-hour course in implicit bias awareness training as part of their required continuing medical education.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

Formerly Senate Bill 75, Public Act 101-0221 was signed into law by Governor Pritzker in August 2019. Under this Act, Illinois employers are required to train employees on sexual harassment prevention by December 31, 2020, and on an annual basis thereafter.  This requirement applies to all employers with employees working in this State.  Employers must either develop their own sexual harassment prevention training program that equals or exceeds the minimum standards for sexual harassment prevention training outlined in Section 2-109(B) of the Illinois Human Rights Act (IHRA), or they may use the model training provided by the IDHR.
